I recently received an email from a female creative I’ve never met. She included a link to her portfolio and asked if I thought she “had a shot” at winning in The One Show’s One to Watch competition.
Truth? I didn’t look at her portfolio. But I did respond that YES, I thought she had a shot and she should definitely nominate herself.
Here’s the thing, 3 Percenters. You always have a shot. In fact, the only time you don’t have a shot is when you don’t enter at all. Remember Wayne Gretzsky’s famous quote: “You miss 100% of the shots you never take”?
And the likelihood of you winning or losing is not the most important thing. The belief that you deserve to enter – that’s everything.
As my new friend, Rayona Sharpnack says: "We don’t have a shortage of competent women – we have an abundance of confident men."
I heard Justin Trudeau address Catalyst last month, explaining that every woman he asked to run for office/take an appointment, responded with "me? Why me?" while men responded with: "when do I start?"
I want you to enter competitions where you don’t think you have a snowball’s chance in hell of winning. And when you press SUBMIT, I want you to feel the glorious sense of “I don’t give a fuck” about the whole thing.
Who knows who the judges will be?
Who knows how many others will enter?
Who knows what they’re looking for this year?
Who cares! You’re in.
Your work is being seen and considered and that is the ONLY thing that matters. Enter away.
